Bug Club – September

This month, get ready to dive into the world of one of North Americas rarest insects. We will explore the habitat of the Miami Blue Butterfly, their life cycle, why they have scales on their wing, why ants are some of their best friends and how they became one of North Americas most endangered insects. All the kids will get the chance to be a citizen scientists during our bug hunt experiment and get to experience what it is like to be a wildlife biologist during our butterfly research simulation.  Make sure to pack a snack and a water bottle. Kids will be outside for about a half an hour during our Bug Club. Drop off is from 1:00- 1:30 and pickup is from 3:00-3:15. Please make sure you are aware of our late pickup policy outlined in the registration. Membership is due one day before the monthly club begins.

Butterfly Alley Habitat Maintenance: Sept. 15

Please join our volunteers as we clean up Butterfly Alley located behind Little Red Wagon Native Nursery.  We will be maintaining the habitat behind the Little Red Wagon Native Nursery along part of Butterfly Alley (4110 W. Fall Festival – November 18

FREE ACTIVITIES FOR KIDS THROUGHOUT THE DAY! 9:30am – TOOL SHARPENING Bring garden tools, knives, shovels, etc. to get sharpened. Put tools into a bucket and your name on masking tape on each tool handle.  Tools can be dropped off the week before and will be ready for pickup on Saturday or you can bring tools that day.   10:00am – LIVING WITH SNAKES – presented by Shiv Shukla Shiv earned his B.S. in Environmental Science with a minor in Biology from the University of South Florida in 2021. Now, he is a M.S. candidate and researcher at USF in the lab of Dr. Sean Doody, where his research revolves around the intersection of conservation biology and disease ecology, specifically as it pertains to ophidiomycosis in native snake populations. At TBBF, he is a lead reptile curator, and his favorite animal ambassador is Brooks! In his free time, he enjoys hiking, rock climbing, kayaking, playing/watching cricket, and cooking.  Registration fee includes Butterfly Release at 3:15/3:30 pm (weather permitting). $10 - REGISTER HERE   11:15 am – MONARCH MIGRATION IN FLORIDA!  Anita Camacho, President and CEO of Little Red Wagon Native Nursery and Tampa Bay Butterfly Foundation will present new research discussion.  Registration fee includes Butterfly Release (weather permitting)  immediately following. $10 - REGISTER HERE   BUTTERFLY RELEASE after 11:15 am talk is finished (weather permitting) – estimated 12:30 pm ($10 per person or free if attending another paid event that day.)
